This volume of seven novellas is subtitled the "Weird Tales of Wyatt Blassingame" and with titles like THE TONGUELESS HORROR SATAN SENDS A WOMAN SONG OF THE DEAD HOURS OF THE VANISHED BOARDER SATAN'S THIRSTY ONES VILLAGE OF THE DEAD MODELS FOR MADNESS how could it be called anything different? Written between 1934 and 1938 and published in Dime Mystery Stories and Terror Tales, two of the most lurid of the pulps, the stories will enchant as well as horrify you. In his introduction, John Pelan says that Wyatt Blassingame can be considered one of the founding fathers of the pulp horror genre, and Ramble House and Dancing Tuatara Press are proud to bring him back for modern readers to enjoy.

The Tongueless Horror and Other Stories The Weird Tales of Wyatt Blassingame Wyatt Blassingame 9781605434858 Books

Ramble House does it again with yet another EXCELLENT collection of 'weird menace' / 'shudder pulp' stories from those unjustly overlooked horror pulp magazines of the 1930s. 'Weird menace' aficionado John Pelan (who provides a highly informative introduction) has again selected a premium set of creepy & shocking stories - this time from one of the top horror pulp masters Wyatt Blassingame. These highly entertaining stories are sure to delight fans of wildly descriptive, fast-paced horror. Lurid and shocking depictions of sadism & terror abound and no time is wasted getting down to business with the title story that leads the pack. Within the first few pages we get a mutilated, tongueless corpse and a frenetic chase scene between a tough detective and a shadowy figure. Creepy and menacing characters are soon introduced as Blassingame cleverly crafts a sinister M.O. for the killer(s) that involves injecting victims with a paralyzing drug shortly before mutilating them. In a masterful stroke of genius by the author, the detective gets a quick injection in the leg and has only a short amount of time to try to solve the case as the paralysis slowly creeps through his body! This author sure knows how to pull you into a story.

This collection plays out like an anthology of some of the best short horror movies you've never seen. Imagine them as literary versions of the old EC comics (only better written and even more gruesome) and you'll come close to the tone and atmosphere on display. I highly recommend these stories to those who crave no-nonsense fast-paced horror that only slows down to savor the rich atmosphere of horror and dread. A steady stream of lurid adjectives, crafty suspense and vivid depictions of cruelty are what you can expect from 'weird menace' pulp stories. It's clear that Blassingame had a good time writing them. Horror fans will surely have a GREAT time reading them.
